Why everyone benefits from a digital ‘tune-up’, from local businesses through to senior citizens – Nicola Robinson, Digital Trainer at Google’s Digital Garage in Sheffield

Nicola Robinson is a Digital Trainer at Google’s Digital Garage in Sheffield, which offers free digital skills training seven days a week until November 2017. People who visit are able to learn everything they need to make the most of online opportunities, from developing their own web presence to growing their business or charity online. Courses are available, or people can just pop in for free advice.

“…At the Digital Garage, we help individuals and businesses – everyone from a 100-year-old lady who asked for Skype to be loaded on to her iPad to businesses that want digital help to grow…”

Why I love working in tech

There are so many opportunities for women in tech. Working in tech is not a nine to five job – it offers flexibility and it’s fast, as well as exciting. The tech industry thrives on collaboration. I’ve found male colleagues genuinely supportive and encouraging. I’ve started my own business in ecommerce, and ventured into the world of tech start up.

Background to the Digital Garage

The Google Digital Garage was set up to help British businesses learn digital sills and grow faster. Businesses and start-ups are invited to get a digital ‘tune-up’, as well as taking master classes and workshops.

All the evidence shows that businesses with a strong online presence grow faster and generate new jobs more quickly.

On a day to day basis my role involves:

  • Delivering face-to-face training within Google’s first physical garage in Sheffield
  • Delivering training at keynote sessions at large-scale events and to various audience types
  • Helping evolve and develop current training materials / presentations
  • Creating written / video content for publication online
  • Data management – complying with confidentiality and protection laws

Giving back to the community

Without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my job is giving back to the community and helping businesses grow through digital. When we help businesses grow we create more jobs.

At the Digital Garage, we help individuals and businesses – everyone from businesses that want digital help to grow and create more jobs in the local area. We have also been helping the older age group with getting to know tech life and how it can help their businesses and in life. We had a 100-year-old lady who asked for Skype to be loaded on to her iPad!

We have just been open a month so far but so far but I would say at the moment the most popular courses are ‘Social media for business’ and our ‘Analytics masterclass’.

We will be going on tour in South Yorkshire on the Google bus, so watch this space!
